Behind Our Beauty Cabinets, the SOS Team Shares The Skincare Routine That Saved Their Skin

Finding a routine for your own skin is a long trial and error process. As more skin concerns emerge with aging, changing environment and lifestyle, we learn to adapt our routine with different products. We asked our team to snap a shot of their beauty cabinets with their favorite products and share their routine that has improved their skin (with picture proof).

Lauren

Skin Type: Sensitive, Skin Allergy Prone, Acne Prone, Oily

Routine: I have always been obsessed with skin care, probably because I struggled with acne throughout my teens. I was going to the dermo at the age of 13, got placed on Accutane by 14, and have been seeing an esthetician ever since. After Accutane, my acne has never been a huge concern, but instead my acne scars and overall skin texture. In my early 20’s, my skin was finally at a place that I was proud of. I became a huge skin care product junkie and loved trying out new things. Then about 2.5 years ago, when I was 24, I suddenly developed this skin condition called Keratosis Pilaris. It took me up until recently to figure out exactly what it was. During these years, I went through many trials and errors trying to help cure this. It would come and go with major to mild flare-ups. Ultimately, this has not only made me realize how sensitive my skin is, but has caused me to completely simplify my routine.

My skin when I had Keratosis Pilaris

The best thing for Keratosis Pilaris is exfoliation! Whether it’s chemical or physical. I do both. The brand that has helped me keep this rash under control is called TOUCH. It is mainly glycolic acid base. All I do is cleanse, exfoliate every other day, tone, and moisturize. My favorite additive to my stripped down routine is using an anti-pollution serum Dr. Loretta Intense Replenishing Serum. This stuff is great because I honestly believe my KP is caused by the LA pollution. Anytime I visit ANYWHERE else for at least 2 days, my skin clears up beautifully. So this serum is great to try and combat the poor air quality out here. It is super light-weight, non-greasy, and unscented. It gives my skin that dewy glow we all strive for.

Skint Type: Combination, Sensitive and Allergy with harsh chemicals

Routine: My skin has always been pretty clear and sturdy. I get the occasional breakouts, especially during my teen years, on my chin and in my T-zone. I can really track the health of my skin by my lifestyle whether it be hormonal, stress or eating behaviors. I’ve been a vegetarian for 13 years and cutting down on eggs and dairy has shown a huge improvement in my skin – way less oily and prone to acne. I’ve dealt with depression and anxiety my whole life which really puts a halt on my self care routine. Taking the time to slow down is a huge part of maintaining my health, both physically and mentally. To help manage stress I make sure to practice meditation, gratitude, exercise and indulging in my beauty routine (luxurious baths, scents and products do wonders to my mood!) .

Allergy under my eyes

During the time I really implemented this regime, I noticed I was way more sensitive to makeup and skin products with harsh chemicals – parabens, perfume and alcohol, oh my! I would develop an allergic reaction under my eyes that were painful, flaky and hard to treat. My dermatologist and I discovered it was from some of the ingredients found in many products, and since I’ve switched to healthier options the allergy hasn’t returned. I try to only purchase brands that are cruelty free, vegan, hypoallergenic and focused on sensitive skin.

Some of my favorite lines are Biossance, Versed and Mario Badescu which are super affordable and high quality brands. I’ve always been obsessed with the Biossance Squalane + Vitamin C Rose, which Aimee just partnered with and got me hooked on in the first place. The smell is so good and leaves my skin super hydrated and non greasy, I use this one at night. My other go to is the Versed Stroke of Brilliance Brightening Serum – I pair it with their Hydration Station Booster with HA. This combo is amazing, so clean and clear you can barely tell you’re wearing anything. I typically use these in the morning after washing my face and toning with a Mario Badescu spray. Follow with a simple moisturizer like Cetaphil and Burt’s Bees Tinted BB cream with SPF. This is my every day “barely there” look but is also a great base for makeup application afterwards.

Skin Type: Dry, Combination, prone to hyperpigmentation.

Routine: I am a skincare lover and have been known to splurge on all the fancy new items. I was at a point where I was trying out so many new products and layering so many serums that it was overwhelming and I wasn’t sure what was helping or doing damage, not to mention it’s expensive. Now I have slowly started to scale back and simplify my routine with just the essentials. It makes my morning and evening routine more enjoyable.

Star Product: Skinceuticals C E Ferulic needs no introduction as it has been a cult fave for years and was recommended to me by Jamie Chung! It has been a longtime staple in my routine as it provides UV protection and overall brightening better than the rest. It’s an investment but you only need a few drops each morning so it lasts forever.

Daytime:
Toner – Olehenriksen Glow2OH™ Dark Spot Toner (for hyperpigmentation and dark spots)
Eye Cream – Kiehls Creamy Eye Treatment
Vitamin C, the cult fave – SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic
Moisturizer (with two drops of oil) – Embryolisse Lait Creme Concentre, it is super hydrating for dry skin with Pai rosehip face oil
SPF – IMAGE Skincare PREVENTION + Daily Matte Moisturizer Oil-Free SPF 32
Natural Deodorant – Malin+Goetz Eucalyptus Deodorant

Nighttime:
Oil Cleanser – Everyday Oil (which I rave about all the time and use these reusable bamboo makeup remover pads)
Eye Cream – Kiehls Creamy Eye Treatment, or if I want something lighter I use Laneige Water Bank Eye Gel
Retinol – obsessed with this Shani Darden Skin Care Retinol Reform
Face Oil – SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic

Skin Type: Oily, Acne Prone, Non-Sensitive Skin (minimal reaction to products)

Routine: If there is one word to sum up my skin care routine, it would be “dynamic”. I have struggled with acne since I was 12 years old and it has persisted and transformed into my 30’s. Although far less severe now, I am very careful about my skincare routine in regards to breakouts and clogged pores more than anything else. I have very resilient skin that is less responsive to product in general, so keeping my routine mixed is key. I like to say I keep my skin “on its toes” so that it’s never too comfortable with any one product!

I rotate my face wash, lotions, and masks on both a weekly/daily basis, (usually salicylic acid base which helps with acne). I balance my routine with a few key items that are my every day must haves. My favorite serum right now is Glossier Super Pure Serum. It helps with calming redness and overall size of acne without drying out skin. I apply this at night only following a rich moisturizer. It’s really important that people with oily skin, like myself, use more oil to combat oil! It sounds contradictory, but ever since introducing oil and heavy moisturizers into my skin care routine, I have seen my skin’s natural oils thrive without having to blot every hour. As I get older, I have also become drawn to firming and anti-aging serums. One of my favorite brands, Versed, has an amazing On The Rise Firming Serum that helps tackle signs of aging and stress as well as boost overall collagen production. It’s never too early to kickstart your anti-aging routine!

Routine: For the longest time I thought I had dry and sensitive skin and only recently have I realized that my skin type was actually combination with oily T zone. So I started incorporating the Kiehl’s Calendula Deep Clean Foaming Face Wash into my routine, which is not over-drying and leaves my skin fresh and clean. I get occasional breakouts the week before my period and the Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate is amazing at telling my skin to calm down. It’s very lightweight and hydrating and great for combination skin.

Serum – Aesop Lightweight Facial Hydrating Serum
Moisturizer – Fresh Lotus Anti- Aging Daily Moisturizer
